The Stiff Chilli sponsored Bali Rugby Club “Chillis” partecipated for the first time at the Jakarta 10’s, a tournament with all the Indonesian teams and used as trials for the selection of the Indonesian National Team.

In our first Jakarta 10's (in effect the  Indonesian Championships) in appalling conditions- some parts of the field had 10-15 cm of water- the Bali Rugby Club's "the Chilli's" with stingy defense,and  with a good young backline set in motion by  newcomer  Mick Serong remained undefeated and  let in no points.

And yet we were eliminated on a technicality in the semi finals.

First game was against the Papua Koteka's,with a squad full of  Indonesian reps .This was the team that knocked us out of the Bali 10's last year.We reversed that result with a hard fought  one unconverted try  to nil game.The solitary try coming from long time Bali resident Cameron Black in his first outing with the Bali team.

Second Game against the 2nd home team Jakarta Dragon's was a dour struggle resulting in 0-0 draw.

Finally by the third game against last year's Jakarta 10's winners,the Sangatta Saracens,The Bali Chilli's started getting into their groove with a 32-0 whitewash.Edward Andrews scored a double,Cameron Black again on the scoreboard and even the forwards getting into the act ,with the Big G ,Gunther Kitzler cleverly disguised as a winger crossing out wide and Stewart Henderson straight up the middle with a reverse dunk try.

As winners of our group,we were now in the semis against Jakarta Komodos (the Jakarta A team)They were another team that beat us last year at the Bali 10's.As the rain came down and being one man down as Gunther was sinbinned for backchatting not the ref but a Jakarta player,thanks to Bali's irontight defense the game finished in a 0-0 draw.

So it was on to extra time.

Despite dubious refereeing ,appalling conditions as the tropical downpour continued in the twilight,Jakarta and Bali battled through with no change in the score.

However on a countback of tries, Jakarta went through to the final,where they subsequently lost to the Sumbawa Nagas.

A special mention to Stewart Henderson,Nick Klaus,Greg Hinchcliffe,Edward Andrews and Mark Parthezious who backed up  from the Bali Gecko’s Anzac Cup Tour to Hellfire Pass and River Kwai in Thailand last weekend.

A big welcome to newcomers Kurt Lovell ,Mick Serong, Nathan Flax and Cameron Black who all had strong games.

Many thanks to Anthony Lennan,for coaching,Patrick Monsarrat (the Back Doctor) for rebuilding battered bodies for the next game and to Jean Luc Shultz Chen for making the  trip down from Singapore to help stiffen the front row.

So in summary, a successful maiden tour ,undefeated,no points let through and moving forward  wins and draws against the teams  that defeated us last October in Bali.

Bali is back….
